Apply Online for PAN Correction

If you want to make changes in the existing PAN such as a change in name, date of birth, etc, you can apply for it online. The procedure is almost the same as you apply for a new PAN except in case of corrections in PAN, you also need to submit the documents to support the changes required in PAN. Make sure you have the required documents to easily do the correction online.The process is quite simple and fast. You just need to follow a few simple steps and can also track the status of your PAN online. However, there are certain charges that an individual needs to bear while applying for PAN correction online.

Step 1: Visit NSDL online (https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html )

Step 2: Select ‘PAN Correction’ option from the ‘application type’ dropdown, and fill out your personal details

Note: After submitting, you will be redirected to a new page. A token number will be generated and displayed to the applicant before filling the form. This token number would also be sent on your email address provided in the application for reference.

Step 3: Click on ‘Submit Scanned Images through e-Sign’ and under that mention the PAN number you want to correct.

Step 4: Fill out your personal details carefully. For changes or correction in PAN data, fill all mandatory fields (marked with *) of the form and select the corresponding box on the left margin of appropriate field where correction is required.

Step 5: Following this fill out your address details. The address provided will be updated in the Income Tax Department database and will be used for further communication.

Note: Fill the details asked at the below of the page. However, on the bottom, you will find an option to surrender the additional PANs acquired by you inadvertently. Leave this out.

Step 6: Clicking on ‘Next’, will take you to another screen where you need to select and upload accepted proof of age, residence and identity.

Note: If an applicant mentions Aadhaar number in the form, proof of Aadhaar along with supporting documents is mandatory. And, If a copy of Aadhaar is selected as proof of identity or address or date of birth, then it is compulsory to enter Aadhaar number.

Step 7: After submitting you will get a preview of your application form. Verify your details in the preview form, make the necessary changes if required, and proceed towards the payment.

Note: If a communication address is within India, the processing fee is Rs. 110. For the communication address outside India, the processing fee is Rs 1020. 

  • Payment can be made either by demand draft, credit or debit card or internet banking. The demand draft, if used, shall be in favour of ‘NSDL – PAN’ and be payable at Mumbai. 
  • The Name of the applicant and the acknowledgment number should be mentioned on the reverse of the demand draft.

Step 8: On successful payment, a downloadable acknowledgment will be displayed on the screen. The applicant must save, print it and send it to NSDL e-Gov.The applicant is required to affix two photographs in the space provided in the acknowledgment and cross-sign it in such a manner that a portion of the signature is on the photo as well as on acknowledgment receipt.

Note: If the applicant is not an individual, the acknowledgement receipt shall be signed by the authorised signatory (Karta in case of HUF, Director in case of Company, Partner in case of Partnership Firm / LLP, Trustee in case of Trust and Authorized signatory in remaining categories).

Step 9: Superscribe the envelope with ‘Application for PAN change request’ along with the acknowledgment number.

Note:The acknowledgment duly signed, affixed with photographs along with demand draft, if any, proof of existing PAN, proof identity, address, date of birth is to be sent to the following address:

NSDL e-Gov at ‘Income Tax PAN Services Unit, NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited, 5th Floor, Mantri Sterling, Plot No. 341, Survey No. 997/8, Model Colony, Near Deep Bungalow Chowk, Pune – 411 016’.

Reasons for Online Correction

  • Spelling Errors: If changes arise due to spelling errors in the PAN card details such as the applicant’s name, father’s name, date of birth details, etc.

• Change in Name: If the applicant wants to make changes in his or her name due to marriage, divorce, etc

• Change in Contact Address: If the address mentioned by the PAN cardholder needs to be updated or changed.

• Signature Mismatch: If there is a discrepancy and the signature of the PAN holder does not match or is unclear.

• Poor Photo Clarity: If the photo of the applicant is blurred or unclear.

• Printing Error: Sometimes, the PAN number could be misprinted.

Note: PAN holders must never neglect the need to make such corrections or changes as it can lead to serious problems at a later stage, by delaying further documentation or bank related process. If the PAN number is not known, it can be checked by visiting the official website of the income tax department.

Documents Required for PAN Correction

For Indian Citizens and Hindu Undivided Family (HUF):

Copy of Identity Proof: Aadhaar, Voter ID, Driving License, Passport, Ration Card with Applicant’s Photo, Arms License, Any photo identity issued by Central Government, Pensioner’s card, Central government’ health service card scheme card 

Note: Original Of-Certificate of identity signed by an MP, MLA, MLC or a gazetted officer, bank certificate on the bank’s official letterhead with name and stamp of the issuing officer.

HUF:An affidavit made by Karta stating name, father’s name, and address of all members on the date of application. 

Address Proof: Aadhaar, Voter ID, Driving License, Passport or Spouse’s Passport, Post Office Passbook with applicant’s address, Latest property tax assessment order, Electricity bill, property registration document, bank account statement, credit card statement, Gas connection, Central government issued domicile certificate

Note: Original Of-Certificate of identity signed by an MP, MLA, MLC or a gazetted officer, Employer Certificate

For Foreign Citizens

Copy of Identity Proof: Passport, Person of Indian Origin (PIO) Card, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card, Citizenship Identification Number of the Applicant, Taxpayer identification number attested by Apostille, the Indian Embassy, the Indian High Commission, the Indian Consulate, or authorized officials of scheduled banks registered in India which have branches overseas, Bank account statement (in the country of residence), NRE bank account statement in India, Certificate of Residence in India, Registration certificate issued by the Foreigner’s Registration Office (must show an Indian address), Visa, appointment letter from an Indian company, and original certificate of Indian address issued by the employer

Address Proof: Passport, Person of Indian Origin (PIO) Card, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card, Citizenship Identification Number of the Applicant, Taxpayer identification number attested by Apostille, the Indian Embassy, the Indian High Commission, the Indian Consulate, or authorized officials of scheduled banks registered in India which have branches overseas

  • Company: Certificate of registration
  • Partnership: Certificate of registration or partnership deed

What are the Processing Fee and Charges for PAN Card Correction

How to Check PAN Card Correction Status

With the help of an acknowledgment number, you would be able to know the real-time status of your PAN correction. This number is received post successful submission of the form. All you need to do is just navigate to the website and select ‘Track PAN Card’. Once the window opens, enter the tracking number (acknowledgment number in case of NSDL and application coupon number in case of UTIITSL), your PAN number (if required), and other details. Hit ‘Submit’ and track the status of the change.
