The procedure is almost the same as you apply for a new PAN except in case of corrections in PAN, you also need to submit the documents to support the changes required in PAN. Step 1: Visit NSDL online (https://www.onlineservices.nsdl.com/paam/endUserRegisterContact.html )

Step 2: Select ‘PAN Correction’ option from the ‘application type’ dropdown, and fill out your personal details

Note: After submitting, you will be redirected to a new page. A token number will be generated and displayed to the applicant before filling the form. This token number would also be sent on your email address provided in the application for reference.

Step 3: Click on ‘Submit Scanned Images through e-Sign’ and under that mention the PAN number you want to correct.

Step 4: Fill out your personal details carefully. For changes or correction in PAN data, fill all mandatory fields (marked with *) of the form and select the corresponding box on the left margin of appropriate field where correction is required.

Step 5: Following this fill out your address details. The address provided will be updated in the Income Tax Department database and will be used for further communication.

Note: Fill the details asked at the below of the page. However, on the bottom, you will find an option to surrender the additional PANs acquired by you inadvertently. Leave this out.

Step 6: Clicking on ‘Next’, will take you to another screen where you need to select and upload accepted proof of age, residence and identity.

Note: If an applicant mentions Aadhaar number in the form, proof of Aadhaar along with supporting documents is mandatory. And, If a copy of Aadhaar is selected as proof of identity or address or date of birth, then it is compulsory to enter Aadhaar number.

Step 7: After submitting you will get a preview of your application form. Verify your details in the preview form, make the necessary changes if required, and proceed towards the payment.

Note: If a communication address is within India, the processing fee is Rs. 110. For the communication address outside India, the processing fee is Rs 1020. 

  • Payment can be made either by demand draft, credit or debit card or internet banking. The demand draft, if used, shall be in favour of ‘NSDL – PAN’ and be payable at Mumbai. 
  • The Name of the applicant and the acknowledgment number should be mentioned on the reverse of the demand draft.

Step 8: On successful payment, a downloadable acknowledgment will be displayed on the screen. The applicant must save, print it and send it to NSDL e-Gov.The applicant is required to affix two photographs in the space provided in the acknowledgment and cross-sign it in such a manner that a portion of the signature is on the photo as well as on acknowledgment receipt.

Note: If the applicant is not an individual, the acknowledgement receipt shall be signed by the authorised signatory (Karta in case of HUF, Director in case of Company, Partner in case of Partnership Firm / LLP, Trustee in case of Trust and Authorized signatory in remaining categories).

Step 9: Superscribe the envelope with ‘Application for PAN change request’ along with the acknowledgment number.

Reasons for Online Correction

  • Spelling Errors: If changes arise due to spelling errors in the PAN card details such as the applicant’s name, father’s name, date of birth details, etc.

• Change in Name: If the applicant wants to make changes in his or her name due to marriage, divorce, etc

• Change in Contact Address: If the address mentioned by the PAN cardholder needs to be updated or changed.

• Signature Mismatch: If there is a discrepancy and the signature of the PAN holder does not match or is unclear.

• Poor Photo Clarity: If the photo of the applicant is blurred or unclear.

• Printing Error: Sometimes, the PAN number could be misprinted.

Note: PAN holders must never neglect the need to make such corrections or changes as it can lead to serious problems at a later stage, by delaying further documentation or bank related process.
